Routed implements RIP. GateD implements just about everything, from HELLO to
RIP to OSPF. RIP is not the most featureful gateway protocol, and I wouldn't
recommend RIP for any security-critical applications. In this sense, I think
GateD is "better." It certainly is more featureful and configurable :-)

If you're interested in security and routing, GateD does support OSPF and it's
authentication features. I've always found the GateD configuration docs to have
very clear descriptions of the supported routing protocols, it can give you
an idea of how the protocols work and weather they might be secure for you.

The GateD source (and documentation) is on

        ftp.gated.merit.edu:/research.and.development/gated
