Intel was the same way until just a few years ago... and they had
way more than 3 or 400 hosts.  They used to distribute passwd and
hosts files via FTP.  No DNS/NIS whatever..

I know at least one of the people who helped them transition away
from that mess... he has some pretty good stories about the way
it (didn't) work...
