Speaking as a vendor, let me echo some things Joel said, and add some he
didn't say. In fact, I am speaking as a vendor whose firewall (the Gauntlet
Internet Firewall) has placed #1 in some publications, and has not placed
#1 in others. (You can guess which ones we buy for reprints. :-)) The same
can be said for the other top three or four vendors in this area.
Doing product comparisons is apparently difficult, and I am not meaning to
be tongue-in-cheek. Some reviews mention missing features, that are
actually there (encryption not being in a product, when in fact is has been
there for 2 years, for example). Some add features that aren't there. One
recent review gave high scores for most improved. Others rate by
performance of HTTP through the firewall. Some leave out key vendors.
Others just get things wrong. (I have seen this for all of the top firewall
vendors in reviews.)
What's the point? I hope it's obvious -- look at more than one review
(we've seen a good list posted here).
