So is a firewall made more secure by adding stuff to it?

I worry about scooping up a gloppy handful of some third-party
PC virus vendor's code and slapping it on top of my nice pristine
firewall written by (one would hope) careful, paranoid,
knowledgeable firewall implementors.

We're in an age of firewall creeping featurism, and at some point
the bugs in the code we pile on our firewalls will become more of 
a security liability than the original problems at which we threw
these half-baked solutions.
