Actually, I've found it quite effective to filter messages. But
instead of rejecting such postings, I filter the copies of the
messages that go to the people who complain about such things.  So
instead of seeing "fucking" they see "fardling", and everybody else
sees what the sender intended.

Our standard filter to do this job is called "tipper".  It's just a
sed script.

Personal attacks are another thing entirely, but I wouldn't put up
with these on my lists, regardless of whether four-letter words were
used or not.
