Collaborative filtering is definitely the way to go in the future, but to 
do it right either requires modifying mail user agents (so that 
individual Seals of Approval can be combined and attached to the 
messages they reference transparently), or having people read mailing list 
mail through a web interface (more doable now, but web browsers are 
really poor when it comes to navigating threaded streams of data, like 
mailing lists).  As you can see, I've thought a lot about this :)
