Marko Toivanen suggested to Bill Silvert,

| I've found that occasionally "user unknown" bounces are due to local
| nameserver problems, not the the users really being unknown.
|
| Try the postmasters of the bouncing sites, they should be able to tell
| you what's happening.

There was one time I tried that only to find that mail to postmaster was
bounced with the same error as that for mail to the subscriber. (It was
"unknown mailer error.") Then it vanished and her mail went through again.
About a month later it resumed and kept up for three days running, so I un-
subbed her.

There's not much one can do when mail to postmaster isn't delivered either.

But I still think that the winners in this category are the people who, when
they notice their mail from the list has dried up and ask what happened, and
you tell them why they were unsubbed and your explanation is delivered, get
mad at you for not telling them. I've taken the pre-emptive measure of in-
cluding, "and I couldn't tell you what was happening because if I can't send
you email, I can't send you email that says `I can't send you email,'" when
they ask me what happened.
