I'm introducing email distribution of customized information for
customers of a large financial institution. The customer will always
explicitly choose to receive these emails. By the end of this year, we
predict sending an average of around 20k messages per day, with peaks
of up to 120k messages in a single day, and up to 70k messages in one
chunk.
How should I go about warning receiving ISPs about this volume? I want
to be a good internet citizen, and I also want to avoid having our
legitimate emails being treated as spam because of volume alone. We've
got the advantage of already having a database of email addresses of
current customers, so we can make a pretty good prediction of the
volume to be going to larger ISPs. (Not surprisingly, AOL is by far
the largest single ISP.)
Along the same lines, are there any rules of thumb about maximum
messages per unit time and/or the maximum polite hold time for an
ISP's email port?
