I'm sorry, (a) I don't see how this is the case, given that the differences
in back-end subscription mechanisms are difficult to hide no matter what
interface is put on the front-end, and (b) I don't think
web-based subscription is necessarily the answer.   To me, making
people fire up a web browser to subscribe to a mailing list is like
requiring that they own a television to use the phone.
