I provide private indexing/searching.  Public would probably be better, but
my users have specifically asked that I do someting to protect their e-mil
addresses from spam harvesting.

I wonder if there is a way around this (without filtering every e-mail
address statically or dynamically).

What is the specific characteristic of your list that requires public
indexing as opposed to just privately searchable indexes?
