I think that we need to be very careful that we don't raise the
barrier to learning the proposed system so high that very few would
bother about it. Also, won't those list-owners who want to exercise
fine distinctions want to be asked anyway so that they can personally
decide whether they want that particular archive / mirror / robot ?

If we adopt a multidigit code, it should have two digits or four, not
three -- so that it won't get confused with SMTP and HTTP response
codes.
