I was once on a list running under MDaemon (which is apparently primarily an
MTA with list management as an afterthought).  Every three months I got a
renewal request that needed to be answered, or my subscription would expire.
After my first month or so, the renewal requests were the only mail it sent
me; it never had any posts any more.

That went on for maybe a year and a half, when the renewal notices stopped
coming.  I asked the listowner, and he said he had closed the list without
telling the remaining members.
