OK, what a private list, subscribable-to only upon
invitation?
I'm on at least one that I don't run, and that was put
together by half a dozen of us. We wanted a flame-free forum for
crtain topics that were effectively unmentionable on the usenet
group we all followed.
Any new members -- we're up to forty or fifty, I think --
have to be nominated and discussed before the moderator even takes
a consensus. Only when that's favorable does an invitation go out.
Absent one, nobody -- we hope, and try to make sure -- ever even
hears of the list's existence. When an invitee does subscribe, the
moderator informs the whole list.
