What version of linux/unix are you running? What do the /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, /etc/group lines containing "majordom" look like? Do they match what you used in Makefile? Next, I would check whether /bin/sh (which most probably exists) knows where basename is. If you are not machine owner, then maybe you do not have root priveleges ? You need to have root password to install majordomo succesfully.
