$mailer variable

Is there anyone on the list who has successfully used the $mailer variable
on a mmdf system?  As far as I can tell there is no mmdf program its just
 a string of subsequent processes that the mail goes through. We have some
sort of mmdf-fake-sendmail program, so I am trying to set that as to see
what happens, but nothing has been churned out so far, so I am inclined
to think that it is going in a few circles and then will end up in the
postmaster's box...
