OK, a little progress here:

1. munge_domain is on and has been since the list was setup this morning.
2. sending a subscribe request of ``subscribe xyz jblaine@ciesin.org''
with subscribe_policy = open asks for list owner approval when it
   should not.
3. sending a subscribe request of ``subscribe xyz'' subscribes me as
Jeff.Blaine, not jblaine, due to our mail aliases, so this is the
better of the two ways for someone like me to subscribe. If I
subscribe as ``subscribe xyz jblaine@ciesin.org'', then there will
be problems because posts to the list from me will come in as
Jeff.Blaine@ciesin.org, not jblaine, and majordomo will say I am
   not on the list.
4. I cannot get subscribe_policy to allow unmoderated subscribes unless
I set it to ``auto''. ``open'' does not work for any of my lists --
mail is sent to the list owner for approval.

So my main problem now seems only to be number 4.

Thanks for all the help so far. No, really, I'm not clueless.
