It seems that copyright offers the protection that Brent wants.  When
you come up with 2.0 (you can't copyright something unless it is
substantially new) include a copyright notice with liberal terms of use.
Although some flames will emerge, basically all this means is that you
have protection against someone trying to sell your code.

Lots of people state that their software is public domain, but then try
to attach conditions.  Not valid.  If it's PD anyone can use it as they
wish, including scavenging code and selling it.

All the stuff I write is freeware, but copyrighted.  Even then I've
found consultants trying to sell it back to the Canadian government!
