Subject: Consistent, yet random, timeouts

I am running 1.92 on a Linux machine using smail. I am having a problem
with one of my lists (I really only have one that is active) timing out
on at least one person on each message, but never on the SAME person each
message.

The message that majordomo bounces to the owner (me) says something akin
to the following for each person that bounces:
transport smtp: no connection to remote SMTP server: 499 timeout
on read from remote SMTP process

Now, I've tested mailing to each person individually, no problem, and
mailing to each person in a single TO: entry, and received no bounces.

Now, as I said, it is never the same person twice, but it happens for at
least one person each message, so I have to assume that it is something
here, and is either a problem with majordomo, smail, linux, or something
unidentified.

Anyone have an idea what might be the problem?
