i should mention that if the entry in the membership file is of the  
following form:

	keithw  (Keith Willard)

this does work just fine.
its just the

	Keith Willard <keithw>

form that causes my mailer to bounce stuff (which is the vanilla  
sendmail i got with NextStep 3.2, which is a more or less BSD flavor  
of unix).

since i approach sendmail problems with some trepidation,  the fix i  
am considering is to follow a suggestion of John R. and leave the  
strip mode on and patch majordomo to add the nonaddress comment in a  
parenthesis following the raw address.
