Digest ??

Hello majordomo users,

I have my majordomo installed on Linux and all works well. 
There is just one question which keeps burning my mind.

What is a digest and why should i need it. I can't figure it out from the 
manuals (may be I haven't read it well, so pardon me if I have).

Is it some kind of second class list ?

Any help appreciated.
