Today I found what was at fault!
In majordomo.cf I had defined $listdir=$HOME/lists
when it should have been $listdir=$homedir/lists
lists are now visible!!
I tracked it down by setting up an alias for majordomo to run a test
script with a fistfull of standard commands in ( set, id, pwd, ls )
and finished it off with an exit 1 to force sendmail to cough it back.
pwd returned an error and I took it from there.
My apologies for the noise - my thanks to those who mailed with suggestions.
