Subject: Questions on Majordomo Administration

Hi majordomo experts,

Pardon any if any of these questions are basic, but I have read the FAQ
and "Managing Internet Information Services" and cannot seem to find
the answers I'm looking for. I am the list owner, but someone else
(with *very* limited time) is the administrator. Here are the
 questions I have so far:

1. I would like to include the name and company of the subscriber in
the "who" listing, but have not seen this documented anywhere what the
exact proper format of that should be. I would like to have our list
 read like this:

tomryan@attmail.com (Tom Ryan-SciTech Software)

What is the EXACT proper format for SUBSCRIBE/APPROVE if you are
putting in comments? Is it something like (do I actually type in the "< >"):

"approve PASSWORD subscribe LIST (Tom Ryan-SciTech) <tomryan@attmail.com>"

2. Will changing STRIP to YES in the config file enable these comments
or is there anything else I need to do?

3. How do I add a very long email address? Is there a way to continue a
command on the next line? It seems to break the line at 80 characters
and some of the email addresses on my list are quite long (especially
if I can get comments enabled).

4. How do I create an index and add files to it? Since I am not the
administrator, is there a way to mail a file into the index? There are
other majordomo lists on our server and they don't want to give each
list owner full file access. What are the steps that I and the
administrator need to do to transmit files over majordomo?

5. Will those files come across UUENCODED, or do they have to be stored
that way already? Is there a limit on file size?

6. I want to set up groups with the following characteristics. What
(exactly) do I and the administrator have to do?

CLOSED (only owner can add, send, list, who; user can delete)
This is for broadcasting messages to a large email group. They cannot
send messages to anyone on the list or find out who else is on the list.
Subscribe: owner only
Unsubscribe: owner, user
Send: owner only
List: owner only
Who: owner only
Get/Index: user only

SEMI-OPEN-ADD (Users can add and delete themselves, but not send)
This is for broadcasting messages to a large email group. They cannot
send messages to anyone on the list or find out who else is on the
list, but they can add themselves without approval.
Subscribe: owner, user
Unsubscribe: owner, user
Send: owner only
List: owner only
Who: owner only
Get/Index: user only

SEMI-OPEN-SEND (Users can send to the alias, but not add themselves)
This is for discussion groups. They can send messages to each other via
majordomo. and find out who else is on the list.
Subscribe: owner only
Unsubscribe: owner, user
Send: owner, user only
List: users only
Who: users only
Get/Index: user only

Thanks in advance for the help!

Regards,

Tom Ryan
