Writeconfig vs. Updateconfig

I tried changing my config file (changing the digest number).
I read the file, using the config command.
Then, I edited the config file, and used writeconfig to write
it back.  Majordomo acknowledged it, but the effect didn't seem
to take.  Should I have used updateconfig?  What's the difference
in effect bewteen updateconfig and writeconfig?
