I had a similar problem on my BSDI box. I did three things
simultaneously, one of which fixed the problem. However, I don't know which.
1. I upgraded to BSD/OS 2.0
2. I changed all file ownerships to daemon instead of majordom
3. I edited the group file to make sure all the necessary uid's were in
the proper group.
Obviously, 1 is not much help to you, but you might consider trying 2 & 3.
