Subject: MD archive searching capabilities

I hesitate to ask a question for fear of being beaten about the head and
shoulders with a chorus of "It's in the FAQ!!!" responses. :-) But here
goes anyway, if it's in the FAQ I didn't see it, exactly.

Majordomo allows one to retrieve files from a mailing list archive
pretty easily. But if I want to find out when a particular subject
was discussed, I can't determine which archive files pertain to
that subject without grabbing them all and grepping. Does anyone
have tools to allow a search (even a primitive one) through archive
files? (This wouldn't work very well for binary files, clearly --
but I don't have any at the moment.)

Even better would be some way to pull out the individual messages
matching a string and sending them back, perhaps as a pseudo archive.

Is anyone doing anything like this?
