And like hot butter through a knife, the answer comes to me..."sender" in
the config file was set to list , instead of owner-list .  Since "mungedomain"
was off, the two names for the same machine caused the situation to become an
unrecognized error, and around the message went again.

Fixing "sender" has fixed the problem.  I haven't yet tested "mungedomain"s
part in all of this.
