Here's a summary of the replies I've gotten about mailing lists for PC's.
Majordomo needs Perl which does exist for Windows/DOS, but it also requires
multi-tasking and coordination with a mailer such as sendmail or mmdf, which
do not exist on Windows/DOS.
Instead alternatives were offered such as
1) LISTSERV (costs $, offered by LSOFT; email queries to email@example.com)
is available for Windows NT and Linux and BSD
2) MAISER (free, email queries to firstname.lastname@example.org). It works with the Pegasus
email program and is part of freeware Mercury NetWare-SMTP gateway.
3) Novell is coming out with a list manager for their GroupWise line (formerly
WordPerfect Office), but it is not recommended for groups that want to
exchange mail with the Internet.
4) If you have Linux on the PC, majordomo is freely available.
Here's a summary of LISTSERV costs. There are various licensing
schemes dependent on the number of lists and subscribers but the bottom line is:
Windows NT is $625(graduated) or $1000 (limited, one-time cost) for a minimum corporate license
BSDi or Linux is $675 for a minimum corporate license
Except for the limited license and if you want updates and maintenance,
the cost is yearly.
