use FreeBSD and majordomo.   these run on a wide variety of pc hardware.

i have a 386dx40 w/16mb running majordomo for a few lists as well as 
supporting mail for 60+ users and 15k-20k news articles a day.

i have been using FreeBSD since the summer of '92.  it just keeps getting 
better :)   the networking code is robust enough that several internet 
service providers have started using FreeBSD as their os of choice.

wcarchive.cdrom.com--the largest anon-ftp site on the net, T-3 connected, 
runs FreeBSD with hundreds of simultaneous users and connections.
