I just ran into a strange problem that I need help with. We have
been running Majordomo v1.93 on an HP9000/360 and Perl v4.036 for several
months with no problems. We also have a registration form for our WWW server
which allows users to subscribe to the mailing lists when they register.
We have a perl script to parse the registration data for the sysadmin.
If the sysadmin okays the reg, the perl script sends mail to majordomo
with the approve commands to subscribe the user to the proper list(s).
This has worked well until today, when I approved 4 registrations.
One of the four worked fine. However, I got nasty responses back on the
other three for one of the lists (nag-minutes). The transcript is
different for each one, but they all have the same theme 'File table overflow'.
Here are the transcripts:
#1:
open of temp file /usr2/mlm/lists/shlock.14408 failed
File table overflow
ABORT open of temp file /usr2/mlm/lists/shlock.14408 failed
File table overflow at /usr2/mlm/majordomo.pl line 209.
554 "|/usr2/mlm/wrapper majordomo"... unknown mailer error 2
#2 no problems. Subscribed to all lists okay.
#3:
Can't read /usr2/mlm/lists/nag-minutes: File table overflow
ABORT Can't read /usr2/mlm/lists/nag-minutes: File table overflow at
/usr2/mlm/majordomo.pl line 209.
554 "|/usr2/mlm/wrapper majordomo"... unknown mailer error 2
#4:
(same as #1 above, but different shlock number).
BTW, the list in question (nag-minutes) was the first in the approve e-mails
out of 4 possible. Majordomo home is '/usr2/mlm'.
User #1 was successfully subscribed to 'nag-minutes' plus 2 other lists, but
not the last list. Strange, even with the error msg.
#2 was subscribed to all 4 lists, including 'nag-minutes'
#3 did not get subscribed to ANY lists.
#4 did not get subscribed to any lists either.
Afterwards I tried approving another user to the list. No problems. I
checked the list size---only 208 members, so it's not really too big. And
I'm not low on HD space. Nothing unusual in the lists directory. The
only thing I can think of was the multiple simoultaneous approve requests
(about 1 minute apart). But I thought Majordomo was supposed to handle
this situation. At least it has in the past. I really don't have
*any* theories on this, at least none worth pursuing.
I've been thru the FAQ, README, Manual (chapter from ORA's book), but
I can't find anything mentioning this type of error. Sorry for being
longwinded, but I wanted to give the whole scenario. Any help would
be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Larry Schauer
