installed improperly, it can fall apart fairly quickly. done right, it
can handle very large lists quite well. of the digests i run, the
bmw-digest has over 2000 subscribers, the italian-cars-digest almost 800
subscribers, and the alfa digest nearly 500 subscribers; we don't have
any problems with majordomo or sendmail here. the majordomo host is a
sparc 2 running SunOS 4.1.3; we are still running 1.92 with perl 4.036,
not having gotten around to any upgrades lately.
issues:
making sure that sendmail isn't swamped
-- bulk_mailer is good for this
-- for large lists, digest only setups may be indicated -- the users may
whine (our aol digest readers are particularly vocal, because of some
issues about message sizes on aol), but hey, life sucks that way
sometimes.
getting owners & permissions right
-- it is possible to screw up ownership and permissions of files in
subtle ways that leave you with an apparently working list that
is killing the majordomo host.
cheers,
richard
