Forgive me for answering my own question but in case anyone else is
interested...

Basically the problem lies with the behaviour of the -f flag on the version
of sendmail that comes with mmdf, so the solution I eventually came up with
was to install the standard version of sendmail in the majordomo directory
and use that instead.

Simple really!
