A few weeks ago I asked the list for help regarding a majordomo digest
list that was generating a large number of bounces with the error
message "user unknown" when we knew that the user addresses were good.
First, thanks to those who responded, particularly Nigel Metheringham
<nigel@theplanet.net> who spotted the fact that the remote host
transport was sendmail and the error message we were receiving refered
to the list owner rather than the target user.
Solution:
It seems that some sendmail installations can't deal with the
Error-to: header, possibly looking on their own systems for the user
listed there or simply rejecting that header (non-standard?). When I
took the text generating the Error-to: header out of the digest
script, the mail succeeded
