I *strongly* disagree. Here's why, as quoted from the info
file for one of my lists:
-------
(1) How do I post a comment to somebody else's message?
If you use the reply-to command (or your local equivalent)
the default recipient is the author of the message you reply
to, not the list. (In other words, you are protected from
mistakenly posting a private message to the list. A mailing
list that generates replies to the entire list rather than to
the author of the message is an abomination, IMNSHO. That
only leads to private messages flooding and cluttering the
list, and to embarrassing situations. Posting to a list
should always be the result of a conscious decision to do
so.)
If you want to mail to the list, you can either cc the list
(but in that case the author of the message you comment will
get your message twice), or you can edit the to-field with
your editor, substituting the author's name and address with
the list name and address (the latter is the preferred
method).
Alternatively you can post a new message directly to the list
address (i.e., not using the reply-to command).
-------
In fact, everytime I happen to subscribe to a list that
generates default replies to the list instead of the author,
I complain about it.
