More on hiding lists

Thanks to all who responded telling me to check the archive.  I did
and for the record (the next archive that is), I had mixed success.

I modified do_lists in the prescribed way and then from a web browser
requested a list.  The list that I set noadvertise to hide did not
appear.  I thought to myself, 'great! it's working'

Then I mailed a request for a list and there it was again.  Anyone
understand the mechanism well enough to explain this phenomenon?
