Good Evening People:
My name is Larry and I apologize for not saying hello earlier ... I
meant to, but I've only been on the list since yesterday <g>, still ...
................
I have a simple question. My group got spammed this afternoon by
someone who either did it on purpose, out of ignorance, or thought he was
doing me a favor. The post in question was simply a forward by him of a
message he got from netcreations.com postmaster service. However, he
forwarded the message to my *group* and about 10 other individual addresses
that were supposedly influential in, or affected by, mail distribution systems.
The post he forwarded was about the govt. planning to require flags
on all Internet transmissions to indicate their "content," as defined by the
new CDA.
But, "content" of his message aside (sorry :-), my simple question
is this:
Can I prevent an outsider from posting to an OPEN, UNMODERATED
majordomo? I.e., is there a 'first line of defense' that would at least
require the poster to subscribe?
I know I could close the list or moderate each message, but that's
not in the spirit of our groups's intent (we are a local legal discussion
group and I make a big point out of it being an open group and not limited
to lawyers or any group but for those who have an interest).
Thanks for your help. I hope the simple answer to this simple
question is ... yes.
Finally, is this worth making a report to CERN? I realize they
concentrate on system integrity, but this sure comes close to violating the
rights of others ... and other legal issues that easily come to mind ...
however, the legal issues are something I can easily think about ... the
propriety of making a report to CERN or any agency is what I don't know ...
as well as if I can't protect an open, unmoderated list.
Thanks again! Now I'll say that hello and thank you all for being
here. I'm looking forward to readin' now and writin' as I learn more.
My Very Best,
Lawrence S Rosenberg, Esq.
