virtual server

I am completely new here.  Please be nice.

Has anyone out there gotten majordomo working on a virtual server?
I have space and certain amount of control but seem not to have chgrp 
(intentionally on the part of the provider?).  I can't get past the 
install, and no matter what I delete, the "make install" always tries 
to cp majordomo.cf onto itself.

Thanks for any ideas.
