Request For Comments. Internet RFC documents are drafts for standards
for doing things on the Internet, or an ammendation, expansion,
extension, etc., to an existing RFC. Each document has a number; there
are currently nearly two thousand such documents. They are a way of
saying, "I have a great idea for doing this; what do you think?" Some
are widely accepted, such as RFC-822 which defines the format of
Internet text messages (mail). Others are totally ignored except as
jokes because they are jokes, such as RFC-1149, "A Standard for the
Transmission of IP Datagrams on Avian Carriers" (if you are familar with
the movie "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" you should get a kick out of
this one).
