Sort of. The difference is that ANSI is a standards body and the
collection of Internet RFCs are just that, a collection of seemingly
random documents requesting feedback.
BT> The letter saying that the Reply-To = <listname> violates that

Not illegal, per se, since there is no law to back them up. But RFC-822
is the accepted standard, and it should not be violated without a damn
good reason. The only reason for the reply_to option is to
(over)compensate for broken MUAs. But that does not fix the broken
MUAs, and it does cause problems for those of us with MUAs which work
correctly. Although this is not quite so bad as some versions of
Listserv which rewrote the From header; that generated some *really*
nasty feedback loops since errors go back to the envelope sender (From),
which has been rewritten to point to the list. Bouncie-bouncie!
BTW, did you (the list at large "you") know that Gnus, the GNU Emacs
mail and news reader, has a "broken-reply-to" flag specifically to deal
with mailing lists which incorrectly set Reply-To headers? You really
know your "features" and "fixes" are annoying when people go out of
their way to write code to disable them.

Nah, the Internet is self-policing.

That is the great thing about the enlightened anarchy that is the
Intenet; we do not have to accept totally ludicrous standards.
