Here is a problem: if one list goes away, and you do not know which one
you remain subscribed to, how do you know which list to send your
replies?
When a list moves in some fashion, making those who are subscribed to
the old list subscribe to the new one is the best you can do to ensure
that those affected know that a change has taken place. If you do not,
you will have a lot of people who simply do not "get it" wondering
sending mail to the wrong place, and wondering why they have stopped
getting mail from the list. Subscribing and unsubscribing is not rocket
science, and that little bit of hassle ensures that the change sticks in
their minds while at the same time reducing the aggravation level of the
list and Majordomo administrators.
In this specific case, it also neatly avoids the problems of attempting
to merge two totally incompatable database formats into a single
database.
