It is most certainly an MTA issue.  I have lists whose names are 20+ 
characters long with all kinds of dashes etc. and they run just fine.  I 
think he should upgrade to sendmail 8.8.2; I suspect that all his prolems 
will disappear with 8.8.2 installed.
