Can't compile majordomo

Hi, I'm computer science student and I'm having problems compiling my 
majordomo on a debain system.

I've set up the Makefile and the majordomo.cf files and been able to complie
the wrapper. I've also set the owner and group to "majordom" for the home       directory.
I have been following the steps in the installation guide that is provided with majordomo but when I type "make install" I get the following:   

CS1:/home/evans/majordomo-1.94> make install
Testing for perl (/usr/bin/perl)...
Configuring scripts...
chown: :majordom: No such file or directory

Hmmm, if /home/evans/majordomo- doesn't have an owner and group of
        majordom         majordom , do a

        chown majordom  :majordom  /home/evans/majordomo-
(as root.)
drwxrwxr-x   3 30       31           1024 Nov 27 12:18 /home/evans/majordomo-

Copying tools to /home/evans/majordomo-/bin
chown: :majordom: No such file or directory
chown: /home/evans/majordomo-/bin/approve: Operation not permitted
chown: :majordom: No such file or directory
chown: /home/evans/majordomo-/bin/bounce: Operation not permitted
chown: :majordom: No such file or directory
chown: /home/evans/majordomo-/bin/medit: Operation not permitted
make: *** [install-scripts] Error 1 


I would be very greatful for any help or any suggestions on where I've went
wrong or if I'm missing something.
