Sounds like what you want is a listserv-ish feature they dubbed "nomail".
Basically, you can still be subscribed to the list, just flagged as not
receiving mail. Something like this sounds like a nice toy for the 2.0
codebase, since you're going to have a database with info about each
subscriber anyway.
