You've managed to confuse sendmail pretty badly. Just what are you asking
it to do?

Are you asking it to append the message to a directory? How would it do
that? If you want to create these kind of simple archives, you have to
give sendmail the name of a file to store things in, and make sure that
said file is writable by sendmail and any user that it may be running as.
