I'm not the Ray who said that and I DIDN'T have an opinion. However, after
reading what you've posted from RFC822, it seems clear to me that mailing
lists would fall under the category of

I don't see how else one could interpret it.
Though I do use it in that manner, I'm not advocating it. I do it for my
own reasons and so far have had no trouble though some have indicated I
will or at least could have.
I just wonder how you use the particular argument you do against their use
when (as I read it) it argues for their use.
