People do that all the time.
In any case, though, you don't need to camp on a line to run a mailing
list ... mailing list traffic will just hang out on the ISP's server until
you log on, then your machine will handle it all at once.
Depending on how active your mailing list is and how often you log on,
you'll likely load down your modem connection for a few hours when you log
on, but it will work ...
