Subject: What's in a name?

One of our users wishes to have a new list whose name contains a "."
(period, dot). According to the "NEWLIST" information, this is not
possible. Could someone provide a brief explanation or point me to a
reference which gives a little more info on this? (And is it a MJ
restriction or something more general?)

I am content to live with the restriction, but would like to have a little
background knowledge of why, so that I can negotiate with the user. Also
I checked the FAQ but didn't see anything (perhaps I missed it?)

(We are new to Majordomo; currently 1.94.3, about to move to 1.94.4 .)

Thanks in advance.
