Future versions (i.e. 2.0 and beyond) use a directory per list.
The code currently supports list names with periods (since it doesn't
really matter to the internals) but currently no checks are imposed to make
sure that the extra syntax rules regarding periods are followed.
A list directory looks like:
lists/hpc.uh.edu/test-list:
-rw-r--r-- 1 lists lists 45 Sep 8 23:18 Xbanned
-rw-r--r-- 1 lists lists 1479 Oct 13 00:23 _config
-rw-r--r-- 1 lists lists 17 Sep 11 00:38 _dup_id
-rw-r--r-- 1 lists lists 43 Sep 11 00:38 _dup_partial
-rw-r--r-- 1 lists lists 43 Sep 11 00:38 _dup_sum
-rw-r--r-- 1 lists lists 91 Oct 12 14:07 _subscribers
drwxr-xr-x 2 lists lists 512 Sep 5 23:46 files/

Canned info on 2.0, which might have been funny the first time:
Majordomo 2.0 is not released. It is not near release. It is not in beta.
It is not in alpha. It is not in any Greek letter, nor in any Egyptian
hieroglyphic. It is, sir, a non-program. If you intend to hold your
breath waiting for it, call your funeral director now.
Majordomo 2.0 is being worked on. The basic infrastructure is done and a
running implementation exists. The design is still evolving but is
beginning to solidify nicely. If you want your ideas implemented, get them
in now or wait out the development cycle.
Discussion about Majordomo 2.0 is ongoing. You are getting sleepy. You
will join Majordomo-Workers if you want to discuss 2.0. You will read
Majordomo-Workers archives from http://www.hpc.uh.edu/majordomo-workers.
You will send all of your money to Majordomo Gurus and will hire them for
well paying consulting jobs. You will awake feeling rested and at peace.
