I ask people not to post articles to other lists at the same time as
posting to mine. I would like to know whether my injunctions have a
basis in reason and experience.
My only bad experience was with a publisher who posted an
advertisement for a book to about 12 lists simultaneously. Some
machine in Australia got hold of his posting and, because there was
something wrong with the way the mail software was set up, the mail
queue was not cleared. Everyone on all 12 lists kept on getting the
same letters at 30 minute intervals for a couple of days. As a result,
several disgruntled people left my list. (When I eventually realized
what was going on, I controlled the
inflow by making the list moderated until the problem had been cleared
up in Australia.)
My question is whether cross-postings are liable to cause
difficulties, or was this occurrence a one-off? Are there good reasons
to frown on cross-posting.
Please reply to me by email as I don't subscribe to the mju list.
