Thank you for your suggestion.  Our system manager has now upgraded to
Perl 5, but the problem has not been rectified.  As a reminder for other
readers who may be able to help, here is my original posting:

No, no: the message is put in the mail queue, rather than being dealt with
immediately.

Thank you. Now upgraded; problem persists.

Below is what our system manager has told me:

perl5 is now installed and working as the default, but it makes no
difference. There remains a possibility that the "locale" is not
set correctly for majordomo scripts: I can't see where to set it.

But I have also found in the config file a line that checks that the
version of perl is 4.019 or better, which our previous one was (4.036), so
though Gennaro was very helpful the answer may not be the version. 

Can anyone suggest what the cure to our problem is?
