Majordomo already has a function that does this rather automatically.

You may not want the 'From:' line, since they may have set a Reply-To line.

Rather than reinvent the wheel, why not checkout the majordomo code  
(www.greatcircle.com).

You can fairly easily turn on subscription confirmations using majordomo by  
using open+confirm in the config file
